Angle between two lines
If two lines have gradients m₁ and m₂, the angle θ between them satisfies:
Find the angle between y = 2x and y = x/3.
- Gradients are 2 and 1/3.
Answer: θ = 45°.
Perpendicular distance
The shortest distance from a point (x₁, y₁) to the line ax + by + c = 0 is:
Find the distance from (2, 3) to the line 3x + 4y − 5 = 0.
- Substitute.
Answer: 2.6 units.
Locus of a moving point
A locus is the path of a point that moves according to a rule. The locus of a point at a fixed distance r from a point (a, b) is a circle: (x − a)² + (y − b)² = r². The locus of points equidistant from two points is their perpendicular bisector. The locus of points equidistant from a fixed point and a fixed line is a parabola.
The ratio theorem
The point P that divides the line AB internally in the ratio m : n has coordinates:
The line 3x + 4y − 5 = 0. Choose a point.
