Weather and climate

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a place at a given time. Climate is the average weather over many years (usually 30). The main elements are temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind and pressure. The factors that control climate are latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, ocean currents, winds and relief.

Climatic zones by latitudeBands of climate on a map of the Earth. The tropical zone lies on both sides of the Equator, up to the Tropics at 23.5 degrees. The sub-tropical zone lies beyond them, the temperate zone from about 35 to 66.5 degrees, and the polar zones around the Arctic and Antarctic circles.Polar66.5°–90° NTemperate35°–66.5° NSub-tropical23.5°–35° NTropical23.5° N–23.5° SSub-tropical23.5°–35° STemperate35°–66.5° SPolar66.5°–90° SEquator

Main climatic regions

Tropical (desert)Hot and very dry, under 250 mmXerophytes, scrubSahara, Kalahari
Sub-tropical (Mediterranean)Hot dry summer and mild wet winterEvergreen shrubs and treesMediterranean, Cape Town

Climate and natural vegetation

Vegetation reflects climate. Heat and water decide what grows: rainforests where it is hot and wet, savanna where there is a dry season, desert scrub where it is very dry, and tundra where it is too cold for trees. Plants have adaptations: desert plants store water (succulents), have small leaves or deep roots; savanna trees have flat crowns and thick bark to resist fire.

Average temperature falls from the Equator towards the poles.

Summary

  • Climate is the long-term average of weather.
  • Latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, winds and currents control climate.
  • The main regions are tropical, sub-tropical, temperate and polar.
