Major Features of the Earth's Surface

12 min read

Continents and oceans

About 71% of the Earth’s surface is water and 29% is land. The land is divided into seven continents: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia (Oceania). The water is divided into five oceans: the Pacific (the largest), Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic.

Asia is the largest continent and Australia (Oceania) the smallest.

Major relief features

FeatureDescriptionExamples
MountainsHigh land with steep slopes: fold, block, volcanic and residualKilimanjaro, Mt Kenya, the Himalaya, the Andes
PlateausHigh, flat-topped landEast African Plateau, Tibetan Plateau
PlainsLarge areas of low flat landSerengeti plains, the Amazon basin
Rift valleysLong valleys formed by faultingThe East African Rift Valley
BasinsLow land surrounded by higher landCongo basin

Mount Kilimanjaro (5 895 m) is the highest mountain in Africa and a volcanic mountain. The East African Rift Valley forms Lakes Tanganyika, Nyasa (Malawi), Rukwa, Natron and Eyasi.

Large inland water bodies

The major lakes and rivers include Lake Victoria (the largest in Africa and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world), Lake Tanganyika (the deepest in Africa), Lake Nyasa, and the rivers Nile (the longest), Congo, Zambezi, Rufiji and Pangani.

Vegetation

SavannaHot with a wet and a dry seasonGrass with scattered trees (acacia, baobab)
DesertVery dryScattered xerophytes such as cacti

Temperate forestMild with rain all yearBroad-leaved or coniferous trees
TundraVery coldMosses, lichens

Temperature falls with height at about 6.5 °C for each 1 000 m. This is why Kilimanjaro has snow at the top even though it is near the Equator.

The layers of the EarthA cross-section of the Earth. A thin solid crust lies on top, then a thick mantle of hot rock that flows very slowly, then a liquid outer core of iron and nickel, and a solid inner core at the centre which is very hot but kept solid by pressure.crust (5–70 km)mantle (2 900 km thick)outer core: liquid (2 200 km)inner core: solid (radius 1 200 km)
