Concept of Chemistry

What is chemistry?

Chemistry is the science that studies matter: what it is made of, what its properties are, how it changes and what energy is involved when it changes. Everything you can touch, taste or smell is matter, so chemistry is all around you: the food you cook, the soap you wash with, the fuel in a vehicle and the medicine in a clinic.

Branches of chemistryFive tiles for the main branches of chemistry: organic chemistry of carbon compounds, inorganic chemistry of metals, salts and minerals, physical chemistry of energy and reaction rates, analytical chemistry that finds out what a sample contains, and biochemistry, the chemistry of life.OrganiccarbonInorganicmineralsPhysicalenergy, ratesAnalyticaltestingBiochemistrylife
Chemistry is divided into branches. Many problems need more than one branch.
BranchIt studiesExample
Organic chemistryCompounds of carbonFuels, plastics, medicines
Inorganic chemistryMetals, salts, minerals and other non-carbon substancesCement, glass, fertilisers
Physical chemistryEnergy changes and the speed of reactionsWhy a fire gives out heat
Analytical chemistryWhat a sample contains and how muchTesting water for fluoride
BiochemistryThe chemistry of living thingsHow digestion works

Applications of chemistry

People used chemistry long before the word existed: smelting iron, making pottery, fermenting beer and tanning leather. Today chemists work in industries, hospitals, mines, farms and laboratories.

AreaHow chemistry helps
Food and healthPreservatives, vitamins, medicines, clean drinking water
AgricultureFertilisers, pesticides, soil testing
Industry and buildingCement, steel, glass, paint, plastics
EnergyFuels, batteries, biogas, solar cells
EnvironmentTesting and treating water, air and waste

Chemistry and other subjects

SubjectLink with chemistry
PhysicsBoth study matter and energy: atoms, electricity, heat
BiologyCells use chemical reactions; enzymes, digestion and photosynthesis are chemistry
AgricultureSoil nutrients, fertilisers and crop protection
GeographyRocks, minerals, weathering and the atmosphere
MedicineDrugs are made and tested by chemists
MathematicsMeasuring, calculating amounts and drawing graphs of results
Try itAir is a mixture of gases

Change the amount of oxygen. Nitrogen fills most of the rest. See how the gases share the air.
